RB Leipzig have rejected an £85.4m offer from Real Madrid for 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande. Madrid remain favourites to sign him, though, sitting in pole position in a chase that also includes Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Apparently not here. Leipzig have rejected the offer and Real Madrid are still the team most people think will sign the player eventually. This story exists in the space between “rejected” and “favorite.” Everyone involved understands that a refused opening bid is often just the first step in real negotiations, and not the last.
Real Madrid, Leipzig and the £85.4m Gap
Madrid’s bid was understood to be about £76.9m plus £8.5m in add-ons, about £85.4m or €100m. Leipzig refused. An opening bid sets up a marker for each other club still in the race. And nobody wants to be the one who bids low and ends up with nothing.
But multiple reports say Leipzig want significantly more, some suggesting a fee closer to €120m or €130m. None of that is an asking price Leipzig have actually put out in public, so take the specific numbers as speculation, not fact. There is also a wrinkle being floated in German reports. Leipzig may only agree to sell this summer if Diomande is loaned straight back to them for another season. It’s being reported as a negotiating position rather than a settled position. And it’s worth treating it that way unless a club comes out and says otherwise.
What is not guesswork is that Leipzig paid in the region of €20m for Diomande. Whatever they get for him, it will make the recruiting department look very good.
Why Arsenal and City are still chasing Liverpool’s ceiling
Liverpool are also interested, but they are not willing to exceed about £85m “at this stage”. That alone would break the Premier League record for a teenager, with Manchester United paying £58.9m for Leny Yoro in summer 2024. That’s what Liverpool are describing as a conservative offer. Guess that’s the price for a 19-year-old with this kind of momentum. Whatever it takes to stay in the race.
Arsenal and Manchester City are also in the running, as are Real Madrid, Liverpool and PSG. Four heavyweights, a 19-year-old and a price tag that keeps shifting depending on who you ask.
PSG, Diomande and the Madrid Turnaround
This is the part where the whole race feels shaky. Diomande had already agreed a contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2031 and earlier in the summer he indicated that PSG was where he wanted to go. That should have been the end of that. But Real Madrid have already agreed personal terms with him.
Deals are struck, players change their minds and clubs who thought they had won the race are left explaining why the deal was never done. Diomande appears to be in the same boat, except it’s all happening before anything is official.
Apart from the personal terms, the rest is worth naming as unconfirmed. Diomande is reportedly open to staying at Leipzig on new terms with a release clause but is also “really tempted” to leave, which has been described as a 50/50 call. Elsewhere, mostly on social media, reports claim he has given Real Madrid a “green light” and that Madrid are readying a new bid of over €100m. Nothing is confirmed yet. It was a few weeks ago that he was signing a preference for PSG, which is reason enough to be suspicious of anyone claiming to know where his head is at now.
The shadow of Vinicius Junior
The questions surrounding Vinicius Junior’s future at the club have led to Real Madrid’s interest in Diomande. According to sources close to the negotiations, it is an open race with the transfer window still open for some six weeks.
Madrid don’t generally go chasing a €100m winger for the fun of it. So it is no coincidence that a club with doubts about one of its attacking pieces goes shopping for another. Whether that’s succession planning, insurance or just Madrid being Madrid and going after the best young winger available regardless of who’s on the roster, nobody outside the building knows.
Other reports indicate rising optimism that a deal can be reached in days. Put that with the rest of the unconfirmed stuff, not with the definite stuff.

If you strip away the fee and the scramble of four clubs, the better story is Diomande himself. A year ago he’d made about half a dozen starts for Leganés, scoring in league games against Espanyol and Valladolid before RB Leipzig paid around €20m to take him to the Bundesliga. Things happened really fast, Diomande said.
It’s an understatement. Six starts in a year in a bidding war between Real Madrid, Liverpool, PSG, Arsenal and Manchester City is not a normal career path. It’s the kind of rise that has scouting departments twitching and transfer fees rising, and it’s happening to a teenager who was hardly a first-team regular twelve months ago.

This is the current situation. Leipzig have turned down an £85.4m offer and want more, but no one has confirmed how much. Real Madrid have agreed personal terms and lead the race.
