Batwara 1947 is giving its audiences not one but two trailers this week. Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi will personally unveil the footage at Jaipur’s Raj Mandir on July 28 and then repeat the event for media and fans in Mumbai on July 29. The film is scheduled to have a worldwide theatrical release around August 14.
Less than three weeks to opening day for that trailer drop.
That’s a pretty audacious runway for a two-city rollout, and it speaks to the way this campaign wants to be perceived: in the flesh, on a giant screen, with stars in the room, not as a quiet-to-silence social media link dropped at midnight. A film built around Partition, migration and a house nobody wants to give up doesn’t sell like a comedy and the promotional choices here reflect that.
The Jaipur event is centered around Raj Mandir, the single-screen cinema that has become something of a home base for Deol’s promotional stops. Deol and Santoshi are on hand as fans and local media get a first look at the trailer, a marketing move that feels more like a live event than a press release.
This isn’t Deol’s first return journey. He visited Raj Mandir again last year during the Jaat promotions and in 2023 during the promotional run of Gadar 2, when the re-release of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was done. Both films are reported to be successful, and the reports on Deol’s promotional choices have begun to consider Raj Mandir as a lucky theatre for him.

Aamir Khan’s Alleged Role
Tomorrow’s event in Mumbai will be the same format for the media and fans, and one report quoting an unnamed source says Aamir Khan is expected in both cities. Batwara 1947 is a Hindi historical drama, based on the play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya by Syed Asghar Wajahat. The story revolves around a Muslim family who migrate from Lucknow to Lahore after Partition and are allotted a haveli vacated by a Hindu family. The elderly Hindu matriarch who used to live there refuses to leave, and the film is built around the relationship between her and the family that now live in her home.
This is a story for a two-hour theater with strangers in the room, not a phone screen. It doesn’t need a twist for the premise to work. You only need the two leads in that house to be believable, and the cast Santoshi has assembled suggests he knows it.
Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal & Karan Deol Added To The Roster
The wider coverage of the production also said that the cast of Santoshi includes Deol, Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol, with Khushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur completing the ensemble. The film is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions. That’s a lineup with enough range and enough box-office history that the film doesn’t have to rely on any one name to carry it.
Deol has dedicated the film to his mother, Prakash Kaur, and to all mothers, saying: “Meri Maa hi mera Rab hain, mera pyaar, mera hausla, meri taaqat” meaning “My mother is my God, my love, my courage and my strength”. He himself announced the trailer launch in a simpler line, “Trailer out tomorrow. Both lines are from the same announcement.
Multiple outlets are reporting a global theatrical release on or around August 14, 2026, in time for the Independence Day weekend. Releasing a Partition drama that particular weekend seems more a scheduling decision than a coincidence, one that practically writes its own marketing copy.
A few listings had the date as August 13 instead, which looks like leftover placeholder info rather than an actual change. The larger pattern of reporting has settled on August 14, so treat that as the working date and consider the earlier alternate obsolete.
Raj Mandir and PVR Juhu: The Unpredictability Remains
